Why use an outline sidebar for a long ChatGPT conversation?
Long AI conversations are useful precisely because context accumulates. The problem is retrieval: an answer may still be valuable days or weeks later, but finding it by scrolling becomes increasingly expensive.
An outline changes the task from remember roughly where the answer was to scan the structure and choose the relevant turn.
In OutlineSave, the first level represents your conversation turns, while headings inside AI answers can appear as a second level. This gives you both the overall conversation path and more detailed structure inside longer responses.
What is the difference between the Edge Button, Quick Toolbar and Full Outline?
OutlineSave’s page controls can be understood as four states:

They are not four different features. They are four levels of visibility for the same navigation workflow.
Edge Button: keep the interface out of the way
When the toolbar is folded, OutlineSave can remain as a small edge control. Use this when you want the page to stay visually quiet but still want a fast way back to the navigation tools.
Click the Edge Button to reopen the Quick Toolbar.
Quick Toolbar: common actions without opening the full outline
The compact toolbar is designed for actions you may use repeatedly while reading. In the current version, it provides quick access to the full outline, Bookmark Filter, previous and next navigation, export, and the fold control.
This means you do not have to keep the complete directory visible just to move through a conversation or start an export.
Full Outline: see the conversation as a structure
Open Full Outline when you need the larger map. You can scan conversation turns, inspect second-level headings, jump to a section, move to previous or next locations, work with bookmarks, and start an export from the same navigation surface.
Closing Full Outline returns you to the compact toolbar rather than removing OutlineSave from the page.
How do you jump to an earlier answer in ChatGPT?
Open Full Outline and choose the conversation turn or heading you want to revisit.
For ordinary loaded content, OutlineSave can navigate directly to the matching location. Very long ChatGPT conversations are more complicated because older parts of the conversation may not currently be mounted in the page.
In that case, OutlineSave can discover a broader conversation map before every historical message is currently reachable, then progressively help the page move toward a distant target as more content becomes available.
A useful mental model is:
Discover first → Navigate progressively.
If a very distant target is not reached in one pass, the navigation state may continue to change as older content loads. Once the exact target is available, navigation becomes more direct.
Why can outline numbers change while a long conversation is loading?
During initial discovery of a very long conversation, the outline can already be useful as a rough map, but its sequence numbers may still be recalibrated as more historical content is discovered.
Treat numbering during this loading phase as provisional. After discovery/loading completes, the displayed order becomes the stable sequence for the currently complete conversation state.
This distinction matters: a temporary numbering change during loading does not necessarily mean the final outline is incorrect.
What does Bookmark Filter do in the toolbar?
The outline answers “Where is it?” A bookmark answers “What matters?”
You can mark important conversation turns or second-level headings, then use Bookmark Filter to reduce a large outline to the parts you intentionally saved for later.
This becomes especially useful in research, coding, study or planning conversations where a 100- or 200-turn thread may contain only a small number of conclusions you want to revisit.
Bookmark filtering can also be used before export when you want a more focused copy instead of the entire conversation.
Can I navigate without keeping the sidebar open?
Yes. That is the purpose of the compact states.
Use Full Outline when you need the map, return to Quick Toolbar when you only need common controls, and fold the toolbar back to the Edge Button when you want minimal visual interruption.
If the floating toolbar has been completely disabled from the extension popup, the Edge Button will not remain on the page. Reopen the OutlineSave popup and enable the floating toolbar to restore it.
Can I export from the same toolbar?
Yes. Export is available from the page controls so navigation and preservation can remain part of the same workflow.
A practical sequence is:
Outline → Find → Bookmark / Highlight → Filter → Export.
Use Markdown when you want editable text for notes, PKM, Git or another text workflow. Use offline HTML when you want a browser-readable local knowledge page that preserves richer conversation structure and annotations.
Does OutlineSave upload my ChatGPT conversation to build the outline?
OutlineSave is designed around local processing for its normal outline, annotation and local-export workflow. It does not require an OutlineSave user account or upload your AI conversation to an OutlineSave conversation-storage service just to build the navigation interface.

What if ChatGPT changes its interface?
OutlineSave works with ChatGPT’s live web interface. If ChatGPT changes how long conversations are rendered or loaded, outline or navigation behavior may temporarily change until compatibility is updated.
This is especially relevant to very long conversations because the host page can change how historical messages are mounted, unloaded or restored.
